BJC HealthCare Receives $50,000 Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety from ASHP Research and Education Foundation
Orlando, Fla. ― The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Research and Education Foundation announced last night that BJC HealthCare in St. Louis, Missouri, is the recipient of the 2013 Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety. The award, sponsored by the Cardinal Health Foundation, is the only national honor that recognizes a pharmacist-led multidisciplinary team for implementing significant institution-wide improvements in medication safety.

ASHP Foundation Releases Second Trends Report to Assist Pharmacy Departments in Strategic Planning
BETHESDA, Md. ― The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Research and Education Foundation has released a second trends report to help pharmacy practice leaders plan effectively for the future.  Pharmacy Forecast 2014-2018: Strategic Planning Advice for Pharmacy Departments in Hospitals and Health Systems is similar in format to the original report but examines some new trends. Both reports, which are an initiative of the ASHP Foundation’s Center for Health-System Pharmacy Leadership and supported by the David A. Zilz Leaders for the Future Fund, are freely accessible at www.ashpfoundation.org/pharmacyforecast.

Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Postgraduate Year One Residency Program Receives ASHP Foundation’s 2013 Pharmacy Residency Excellence Program Award
BETHESDA, Md. ― The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Research and Education Foundation will recognize the recipients of the 2013 Pharmacy Residency Excellence Awards at a special reception held during the ASHP 2013 Midyear Clinical Meeting in Orlando, Fla. The Program Award will be given to the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Residency Program in Richmond, Va., for excellence in the training of pharmacy residents and consistently providing an exceptionally positive and rewarding experience to its residents.

ASHP Foundation Selects Research Team to Develop a Drug Therapy Management Complexity Score
BETHESDA, Md. ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has awarded a $499,000 contract to Almut G. Winterstein, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy in the University of Florida (UF) College of Pharmacy, to create a tool to prioritize pharmacist-provided drug therapy management.

ASHP Foundation Announces Pharmacy Leadership Academy Class of 2013
BETHESDA, Md. ― The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Research and Education Foundation has selected 69 pharmacists to participate in the 2013 Pharmacy Leadership Academy. The Academy is a program offered through the ASHP Foundation’s Center for Health-System Pharmacy Leadership, which was established in 2006 through a joint effort by the ASHP Foundation and ASHP. It is funded in part by a grant from Amgen, Inc.

ASHP Foundation Hosts 2013 Research Boot Camp Participants This Week
BETHESDA, Md. ― The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Research and Education Foundation will welcome five pharmacists selected to participate in the 2013 Research Boot Camp to ASHP headquarters from May 15-17. The Research Boot Camp, which is administered by the ASHP Foundation, is a research skills development program composed of distance education, experiential and research conduct components.

ASHP Foundation Responds to Pharmacy Residency Training Crisis
BETHESDA, Md.―Pharmacy residency training is crucial to new pharmacists, yet there is a severe shortage of pharmacy residency programs in the United States. New pharmacists are going into a health care environment that increasingly expects pharmacists to play a major role in direct patient care and assume responsibility for drug therapy management as members of interdisciplinary patient care teams; residencies can better prepare them for these responsibilities. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Research and Education Foundation established the Pharmacy Residency Expansion Grant Program in 2011 as a response to this crisis. This year, the ASHP Foundation awarded $400,000 in grants to 10 institutions for use in establishing additional pharmacy residency positions. Since 2011, the program has awarded more than $1.8 million to 46 institutions total.

ASHP Foundation Announces 2012-2013 Recipients of the Pharmacy Resident Practice-Based Research Grants
BETHESDA, Md. ― Funding has been awarded to researchers who seek to improve patient care by optimizing pharmacists’ roles, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Research and Education Foundation announced today. These studies will address a number of critical health care issues, including transitions of care, preventing readmissions, and the role of genomics in care provision. The researchers are recipients of the 2012-2013 ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Resident Practice-Based Research Grant Program.
