ASHP Foundation Announces 2014 New Investigator Research Grant Recipients
BETHESDA, MD ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has awarded funding to three new investigators to study pharmacy practice model advances through the New Investigator Research Grant Program. This research grant program supports practice-based research conducted by pharmacist new investigators that relates to the assumptions, beliefs and recommendations from the November 2010 ASHP/ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI) Summit.

Yale-New Haven Hospital Receives $50,000 Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety from ASHP Research and Education Foundation
Anaheim, CA ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation announced last night that Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, is the recipient of the 2014 Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety. The award, sponsored by the Cardinal Health Foundation, is the only national honor that recognizes a pharmacist-led interprofessional team for implementing significant institution-wide improvements in medication safety.

At a ceremony held during the 2014 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Anaheim, California, Yale-New Haven Hospital received $50,000 to further promote medication-use safety. Two award finalists, Minnesota Hospital Association in St. Paul and UC San Diego Health System in California, were also recognized and received awards of $10,000 each.

ASHP Foundation Releases New Trends Report to Assist Pharmacy Departments in Strategic Planning
BETHESDA, MD ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has released a new trends report to help pharmacy practice leaders plan effectively for the future.  Pharmacy Forecast 2015-2019: Strategic Planning Advice for Pharmacy Departments in Hospitals and Health Systems is similar in format to prior reports but examines some new trends. All forecast  reports, which are supported by the ASHP Foundation’s David A. Zilz Leaders for the Future Fund, are freely accessible at www.ashpfoundation.org/pharmacyforecast.

ASHP Foundation Announces 2014 Recipients of Federal Services New Investigator Research Grant
BETHESDA, MD ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has awarded the 2014 Federal Services New Investigator Research Grant to Christina M. Caplinger, Pharm.D., of Idaho State University in Meridian. The Federal Services New Investigator Research Grant supports demonstration projects related to implementation of the ASHP/ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI) recommendations in federal health care facilities and federally qualified community health centers.

Glen T. Schumock Receives ASHP Foundation’s 2014 Award for Sustained Contributions
BETHESDA, MD (October 29, 2014) ― Glen T. Schumock, B.S.Pharm., Pharm.D., M.B.A., Ph.D., has been named the recipient of the ASHP Research and Education Foundation’s 2014 Literature Award for Sustained Contributions. Dr. Schumock is professor and head of the Department of Pharmacy Systems, Outcomes and Policy, College of Pharmacy, at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). The ASHP Foundation will recognize all of the recipients of this year’s Literature Awards during the 2014 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Anaheim, California.

Kaiser Permanente Colorado Postgraduate Year Two Ambulatory Care Residency Program Receives ASHP Foundation’s 2014 Pharmacy Residency Excellence Program Award
BETHESDA, MD ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation will recognize the recipients of the 2014 Pharmacy Residency Excellence Awards at a special reception held during the ASHP 2014 Midyear Clinical Meeting in Anaheim, California. This awards program, supported by an educational donation provided from Amgen, Inc., recognizes excellence in pharmacy residency training through recognition of residency programs, preceptors and new preceptors. The recipients of this award have demonstrated excellence and innovation in training pharmacy residents and serve as models for other residency programs and preceptors.

ASHP Foundation Announces 2014 Recipients of Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative Demonstration Grants
BETHESDA, MD ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has awarded funding to four pharmacist investigators through the Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI) Demonstration Grant Program. This research grant program supports demonstration projects related to the assumptions, beliefs and recommendations from the November 2010 ASHP/ASHP Foundation PPMI Summit. The overarching goal of the PPMI is to increase pharmacists’ participation on patient care teams as the professional who is responsible and accountable for patients’ medication-related outcomes while delegating all medication distribution functions that do not require clinical judgment to qualified pharmacy technicians and technology.

ASHP Foundation Announces Pharmacy Leadership Academy Class of 2014

BETHESDA, MD ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has selected 67 pharmacists to participate in the 2014 Pharmacy Leadership Academy. The Academy is a program offered through the ASHP Foundation’s Center for Health-System Pharmacy Leadership, which was established in 2006 through a joint effort by the ASHP Foundation and ASHP.

William P. Owad Jr. Named Chair of ASHP Research and Education Foundation Board of Directors
Janet Mighty, Gerald Meyer, and Jack Tighe also begin terms as new board members
BETHESDA, MD ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has named William P. Owad Jr. (Bill), senior vice president of operational excellence with Cardinal Health, as the chair of its Board of Directors. Janet Mighty, B.S., M.B.A., assistant director of the Investigational Drug Service (IDS) at Johns Hopkins Hospital, was named vice chair. Gerald E. Meyer, M.B.A., Pharm.D., FASHP, director of experiential education at the Jefferson School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, and Jack T. Tighe III, president and CEO of TMG Health in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, were also appointed to the board as directors at large. All took office at the Foundation’s annual donor breakfast, held during the 2014 ASHP Summer Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, on June 1.

ASHP Foundation Announces 2014 Oncology Traineeship Participants
Six health-system pharmacists embark on intensive training to improve care of cancer patients
BETHESDA, MD ― Six pharmacists have been chosen to participate in the ASHP Research and Education Foundation’s 2014 Oncology Patient Care Traineeship. The traineeship is a 4-month educational experience during which pharmacists are trained to develop and maintain specialized services for the management of patients with cancer.

ASHP Foundation Hosts 2014 Research Boot Camp Participants This Week
Foundation continues commitment to fostering new investigators
BETHESDA, MD ― Following the completion of an intensive three-week distance education program, the ASHP Research and Education Foundation will welcome six pharmacists selected to participate in the 2014 Research Boot Camp to ASHP headquarters from May 21-23. The Research Boot Camp, which is administered by the ASHP Foundation, is a research skills development program composed of distance education, experiential and research conduct components.

ASHP Foundation Announces 2014 Pharmacy Leadership Institute Participants and New Alum-in-Residence
Thirty-five pharmacists will learn cutting-edge business principles to apply to pharmacy practice

BETHESDA, MD ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has selected 35 pharmacists to participate in this week’s Pharmacy Leadership Institute from April 27 – May 2. This highly successful executive pharmacy educational program at Boston University’s Executive Leadership Center uses a relevant curriculum, high-quality instruction with peer interaction, and a project to broaden business skills and managerial versatility.

ASHP Foundation Continues to Support Pharmacy Residency Training by Increasing Available Residency Positions
BETHESDA, MD ― Pharmacy residency training is crucial to new pharmacists, yet there is a severe shortage of pharmacy residency programs in the United States. New pharmacists are going into a health care environment that increasingly expects pharmacists to play a major role in direct patient care and assume responsibility for drug therapy management as members of interdisciplinary patient care teams; residencies can better prepare them for these responsibilities.

ASHP Foundation Announces 2014 Recipients of the Pharmacy Resident Practice-Based Research Grants
BETHESDA, MD ― Funding has been awarded to pharmacy resident researchers who seek to improve patient care by optimizing pharmacists’ roles, the ASHP Research and Education Foundation announced today. These studies will address a number of critical health care issues, including pharmacy practice in the emergency department, organizational investment in medication management, smoking cessation and transitions of care. The researchers are recipients of the 2014 ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Resident Practice-Based Research Grant Program.
